Local Burn Suspension Lifted

Following recent rain, CAL FIRE’s San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit has lifted the suspension of burning within State Responsibility Area (SRA) in San Mateo and Santa Cruz Counties effective Tuesday December 15, at 8 am.

While cooler temperatures and recent rainfall have helped to diminish the threat of wildfire, residents are asked to use caution while conducting open burns. Normal open burning restrictions and guidelines will be in effect. Campfire permits can be obtained online at www.readyforwildfire.org. Hazard reduction burn permits can be obtained from your local fire station. Additional information on burning is available at www.fire.ca.gov.

Santa Cruz County allows backyard burns of 4’ x 4’ piles without a permit from CAL FIRE from December to May with specific guidelines. For guidelines, see Santa Cruz County Fire website: http://www.santacruzcountyfire.com/.

For all other Santa Cruz County burns, a permit is required.

San Mateo County requires a permit for all burns.

Contact your local fire station for a permit. Residents must follow burning requirements for their county and maintain control of their fire at all times. CAL FIRE would like to remind residents that any person may be held financially and criminally liable if a fire escapes their control and/or burns the property of a neighbor.

Residents of all counties must ensure it is a permissive burn day by calling the Air Quality Management District for their area. For information on complying with air quality rules regulating open burning, the public should review the appropriate Air District website for information on Burn Day status, burn allocations and Air Quality regulations prior to scheduling a burn.
