Halloween Safety Tips

As the leaves turn and the air becomes crisp, Halloween approaches with its enchanting allure of costumes, candy, and spooky decorations. Here at the Felton Fire District, we want to ensure that your Halloween celebration is filled with fun and free from hazards. Whether you’re trick-or-treating in the San Lorenzo Valley or hosting a festive gathering at home, keeping safety in mind is essential. Here are some important tips to help you have a safe and enjoyable Halloween.

1. Light the Way

When trick-or-treating in the dark, visibility is key. Encourage children to carry flashlights or glow sticks to make themselves visible to drivers and other pedestrians. Bright costumes and reflective materials can also help ensure that everyone stays safe while enjoying the festivities. Parents should accompany younger children, and older kids should stick together in groups to enhance safety.

2. Fire Safety First

Halloween often brings candles and decorative lights into our homes, but it’s crucial to prioritize fire safety. Avoid using traditional candles in pumpkins or around the house. Instead, opt for battery-operated LED lights. These provide the same warm glow without the risk of fire. If you do use candles, ensure they are placed out of reach of costumes and decorations, and never leave them unattended.

3. Carving Pumpkins the Safe Way

Pumpkin carving is a beloved Halloween tradition, but it can pose risks, especially for young children. Adults should handle sharp tools and knives, while children can participate by drawing designs on the pumpkins with markers. If you’re using a carving kit, ensure it’s designed for safe use. After carving, place your pumpkin in a well-lit area to prevent tripping hazards.

4. Candy Safety: Inspect Before Indulging

As the sugar rush begins, it’s important to be vigilant about candy safety. Remind children never to eat candy that has been opened, tampered with, or looks suspicious. Homemade treats should only be accepted from people they know. It’s always a good idea to inspect all candy before consumption. Parents should check for any allergies and ensure that treats are age-appropriate.

5. Trick-or-Treating Etiquette

If you’re out on Halloween night, remember to follow some basic etiquette. Always walk on sidewalks and cross streets at designated crosswalks. If sidewalks aren’t available, walk facing traffic to keep an eye on oncoming vehicles. Be mindful of decorations and obstacles as you navigate neighborhoods, and encourage children to be polite and thank homeowners for their treats.

6. Emergency Preparedness

As with any holiday, accidents can happen. Make sure your first aid kit is stocked and readily available in case of minor injuries. Check the location and expiration date of the fire extinguishers in your home. Familiarize yourself with the location of the nearest hospital or urgent care facility in the event of an emergency. It’s also a good idea to have emergency contact numbers handy, and as always, in the event of an emergency, dial 9-1-1.

This Halloween, let’s work together to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone in the San Lorenzo Valley. By following these safety tips, we can keep the spooky spirit alive while minimizing risks. From all of us at the Felton Fire District, we wish you a happy Halloween filled with treats, laughter, and memories to cherish!
Stay safe, and see you around the neighborhood! 🎃👻✨
