EMR Program

New for 2021 is the Felton Fire EMR (Emergency Medical Responder) Program. This program is designed for those wishing to serve their community without the commitment of completing a FireFighter academy. EMRs will respond to incidents as members of the Felton Fire team, and will be dedicated to medical care and non fire suppression roles. (upon completion of further training) EMR’s will be expected to participate in trainings with fire suppression staff, and will be given opportunities to grow their skillsets. For those wishing to move to fire suppression roles, EMR’s will be able to apply to firefighter roles as internal applicants. This is a fantastic way to build your EMT skillset, and work towards a career in EMS, or fire suppression. This is also a fantastic opportunity for those in a LEO role who wish to expand their medical skillsets.

SELECTION PROCESS

Felton Fire conducts hiring processes in the fall of every year.  Applicants must submit their applications online by following the link below. Once an application is submitted, it will be reviewed and the applicant contacted if they have been chosen for an interview. The interview consists of an oral board of three to five current firefighters and command staff. Once the interview is completed, applicants complete a physical assessment on the same night modeled on the California Physical Agility Test. The physical assessment is timed and is based around seven fire-ground related activities conducted after donning a turnout jacket, weighted pack, gloves, and a helmet. The physical consists of a three minutes stair climb, pulling a section of hoseline, raising a twenty four foot ladder, hitting a tire with a sledgehammer, completing squats while shouldering a section of hose, carrying two tools around a obstacle, dragging a one hundred and fifty pound dummy around an obstacle, and completing arm extensions while holding a forty five pound barbell. All tasks must be completed within seven minutes and thirty seconds to be considered passing. If the applicant passes both the interview and physical agility test, the applicant will be invited for a Chief’s interview, and a background investigation will be conducted. If an applicant passes the Chief’s interview, and background investigation, they will be sent to a medical examination. The applicant will then be slated to begin training at the Basic Firefighter Academy in January. Upon completion of this academy in May, the applicant is considered a probationary firefighter and must complete a probationary period where additional training and testing is conducted by other members of Felton Fire. Once this period is complete, the applicant is considered a full firefighter for Felton Fire Protection District.
