Volunteer with Felton Fire

Serve your neighbors.
Protect your town.

For 90 years, Felton Fire has been neighbors helping neighbors. Our volunteer firefighters are teachers, contractors, parents, retirees — everyday people who answer the call when their community needs them most. Joining FFPD means real training, real impact, and a tradition of service that defines who we are in the San Lorenzo Valley.

What Volunteer Firefighters Do

Volunteers work alongside our full-time EMTs and Captains, responding to a wide range of emergencies and supporting community education. Day to day, that includes:

  • Structure fire response — Suppression, ventilation, search and rescue.
  • Wildland and wildland-interface fires — Critical in our forested mountain setting.
  • Emergency medical responses — Most calls are medical; volunteers assist patients alongside EMTs.
  • Vehicle accidents and rescue — Extrication and traffic management.
  • Hazardous material spills — Initial containment and public protection.
  • Public education — Tabling at community events, Fire Prevention Week, defensible space outreach.

Training Provided

You don't need fire experience to apply. Felton Fire trains every accepted volunteer from the ground up. Training is provided by the District at no cost to you, and includes:

  • Volunteer Firefighter Academy — Initial certification in firefighting fundamentals.
  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification — Patient assessment and basic life support.
  • Weekly Tuesday-night drills — Ongoing skill development with the crew.
  • Specialty training — Wildland, hazmat, vehicle extrication, and water rescue as opportunities arise.

Time Commitment

Volunteering with FFPD is a serious commitment. Here's what to expect:

  • Weekly drills: Tuesday nights at the station.
  • Emergency calls: Respond as available, day or night, when paged.
  • Initial training period: Several months of academy and EMR certification before riding the truck.
  • Community events: Occasional weekend support for parades, festivals, and outreach.
  • Ongoing learning: Continuing education to maintain certifications.

Firefighting isn't for everyone.

You need more than a desire to help people. You need courage, dedication, assertiveness, and the willingness to learn new skills and face new challenges. Committing to serve as a Volunteer Firefighter in our community is a serious decision — it shouldn't be made lightly.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered, you must meet all of the following:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Able to pass a background check
  • Do you possess a valid California driver’s license and a reliable vehicle for responding to the station
  • Willing to respond at any time, day or night, for any type of call
  • Available for Tuesday night drills and occasionally other days as needed for training
  • Able to pass a physical agility test

Desirable Qualifications

The following backgrounds are valuable, but not required:

  • Medical training

  • Military experience

Don't have any of these? No worries — full training is provided for eligible candidates. If you believe you have what it takes, we welcome you to join us.
